“I can’t believe we’re stuck in here,” Rex exclaimed.

“Still no cell reception,” Mona studied her phone. “You?”

“Nope.” Rex turned to face her. “This is great!” he shouted his voice dripped with disgust.

“Don’t worry. Someone will come get us.”

“Don’t worry?” he repeated mockingly. “I don’t think so. We’ve been stuck here for ten minutes.” Rex banged on the doors. No response.

“Relax.”

“It’s difficult to relax when we can’t even let the hotel staff know we’re stuck here.”

Rex glanced at Mona. Her eyes were glued to her phone screen.

“After that dull workshop I sure as hell don’t want is to be stuck in an elevator.” He raked his fingers through his hair.

Mona quit playing with her mobile phone and looked his way. “Workshops are part of your job,” resentment colored her voice. “Don’t forget,” she added, “Hopping on this freight elevator was your stupid idea.”

“It was a stupid idea,” he shot back, “but if we hadn’t worked like dogs these past two days, I wouldn’t have—”

“Worked liked dogs?” Mona interrupted, one eyebrow raised.

“Yeah,” he plunked a hand on his hip. “We haven’t had a break since we came here yesterday. We worked through lunch today. I’m exhausted.” And pissed, he admitted silently.

Rex Cruz analyzed his situation. He felt he had every right to be angry. His boss, Mona Parker, had sprung a last-minute, out-of-state conference on him and he was forced to cancel his weekend plans with Aimee.

Mona leaned against the elevator railing and studied him. “When I hired you a year ago,” she said, crossing long shapely legs at her ankles, “I told you the job would be demanding.”

“Agreed,” he interjected, “but I didn’t expect to be your on-call personal assistant.”

The Elevator Ride - Part 2 will be posted tomorrow. Thanks for reading!

Writing is HARD work. There I said it!

Recently, I had a conversation with a fellow writer about different writing styles. We talked about how some writers can simply sit down on a computer and write on command; I cannot. My pre-writing process can take me ten, fifteen, twenty minutes or more and it usually involves me ‘getting in to character’; I need to connect with the hero and heroine before I can delve into their lives. It is then when I’m emotionally attached that ideas begin to form I’m able to capture the thoughts and the scenes and the story begins to unfold. I can tell you that when I begin to write a story, I too experience the same nervousness that a lot of writers feel. Will anyone read my stuff? Will anyone care about what I have to say? This is the fretful process of a writer, yet, we, I, push forward and write with excitement, optimism, and a lot of discipline. On an amusing note (or maybe not so) one thing that we, writers, often encounter is that non-writers tend to think that writing is easy.
