Reading is FUNdamental!

As writers we hear this all the time, “If you want to be a better writer, you need to be a better reader.” And this is very true. But also true is that in reading we need to do so effectively. Yes, effectively. See, reading well can help make a huge difference in the quality of work you produce.

Here are three tips to ensure you’re getting the most out of your reading experience,

1) Be sure to read books you enjoy.

Unless you enjoy the classics (e.g. Austen, Dickens, Hemingway, etc.) reading mandatory novels some of which you may particularly enjoy might be counterintuitive. Reading should be a pleasure so read books that you like this way you’re sure to read more.

2) Read the type of material you aspire to produce.

Find an author or two or three that you admire and read as much of their work as possible; devour their work actually.

3) Keep a good log of the books you’ve read.

Voracious readers alike can tell you that they may not remember the books they’ve read in the last year, let alone five. So, keep an online journal of authors and titles, if you’re ‘old school’ keep a paper journal.

Goodreads allows members to maintain online book log/s. Goodreads' members can create shelves, designate books being read, and books to be read; books can be rated and reviewed. For those of you who have never heard of Goodreads, I highly encourage you to visit their site and become familiar with its community of readers and writers.

I’ll share with you that last year right around the holidays I made a commitment to myself to read ten novels in 2013 and I posted this on my Goodreads dashboard, I’m happy to say that I’ve already exceeded that goal by 200%. Now, I might have never done so had I not committed to it. Morale of the story: no time like the present to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions J

Happy reading and happy writing folks!

Also, be sure to stop by my YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/MyWritingDen1 from time to time to keep up with my latest escapades. That's all for now folks - take care and be well! Calgon...take me away!

Family/Friends, I understand now why some companies/celebreties hire people to tend to their Social Media networking, it is very time consuming, not to mention mentally exhausting. Point in case, just today I spent over an hour on Blogger and YouTube working out some kinks with my profile/settings. My head's spinning and I'm pooped. On the topic of Social Media, I'd like to take a moment to thank my daughter, Pamela for acting as a consultant on the topic. Pamela works in the field and has actually helped launch my first AdWords campaign. Although it is progressing slowly, I have seen an increase in site ( www.mywritingden.net ) traffic and Twitter - 10 new followers in a week. I've also been receiving sporadic emails from 'fans' telling me how much they enjoy my stories...so this keeps me going. Ohhh, and a VERY notable mention to Linus Ly who gave me the idea to use a 'new' slogan Erotica, She Wrote . Liked it so much I'm already using it. T...

A Long Weekend Ahead :-)

Family/Friends: For many Americans this is the first big holiday since New Year's (not many people get Civil Rights or even President's Day off for that matter), so I hope you have fun plans and enjoy the time outdoors with  family and friends. A quick update about my writing, I have received feedback from three publishers and although all of it has been positive it will require me to revise 75% of my work (each story  is >6K words), needless to say the task at hand is somewhat dauting.  I have, however, taken a couple of days just to think about the best approach and plan on implementing some of my ideas this weekend.  To those of you who keep up with me (Twitter, FB, this blog, etc.) I truly appreciate it.  You keep my spirits up when the 'doubt bug' creeps in. Take care and 'til next time! Maria
